The Workshop

Join Peter Turnley for a very exciting 7 day photography workshop in Trinidad, Cienfuegos, and Havana, three of Cuba’s most exciting and beautiful cities. This seven-day trip, led by Peter Turnley, is operated by Cuba Cultural Travel, a US tour operator authorized to conduct group travel to Cuba. This in an ideal photography workshop for people that would like to photograph Cuba's exciting capital, Havana, and also get to know an important part of Cuba's provincial life in Trinidad and Cienfuegos.

The workshop will spend two and a half days in Trinidad and Cienfuegos; and four and a half days in Havana. Trinidad, on Cuba’s Caribbean coast is thought by many to be Cuba’s most beautiful city with amazing colors and architecture in a setting where the clock appears to have stopped more than a century ago. Cienfuegos, on Cuba’s southern coast offers a view of life in one of Cuba’s most exciting port and coastal towns.

The workshop will then be transported to Havana, where photographers will have the opportunity daily to explore and photograph the neighborhoods of Havana and engage in person-to-person activities with Cubans and their everyday life. Daily presentations and lectures will be led by Peter Turnley and others, and the photographers will be offered a rich schedule of visits to fascinating aspects of Cuban life related to education, arts and culture, photography, music, dance, and food. Presented with a very exciting mix of activities and group shooting opportunities, as well as the possibility for the photographers to make their own personal explorations, participants will visit many of the fascinating Havana neighborhoods, markets, witness great dance and hear great music, visit a boxing gym, one of the Caribbean's most amazing cemeteries, churches, schools, and much more. During the week, Peter Turnley and the participants will be assisted by 3 English-speaking Cubans who will help as local guides and translators. There will be daily group photo review sessions of the participants' photographs and we will finish with a final show with each participant presenting a 15 image photo-essay/portfolio to be edited with Peter Turnley.

All participants will fly from Miami, Florida, on March 10 to Cienfuegos, and will be met by cars and drivers that will take the group directly to Trinidad. The group will return from Havana to Miami on  Holguin.

Camera Gear and Technology

Participants will need to bring a digital SLR or rangefinder camera, a laptop computer, and a thumb drive. Two camera bodies are recommended, with a minimum of at least one wide-angle lens such as a 17-35mm zoom, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm. Students may bring longer lenses as well, but Peter will strongly encourage participants to use a wide angle lens in order to get close to the subject, which allows a sense of context, environment, and intimacy. A wide-angle lens that is relatively fast and has a wide aperture (1.4, 1.8, 2, or 2.8) is encouraged in order to photograph in low light situations. It is recommended that participants bring extra memory cards, extra camera batteries, and all necessary battery chargers for their equipment.

Students will need to know how to transfer the photographs they make each day onto their laptop computer. Each day, participants will bring a selection of their favorite photographs, or those they’d like to discuss, in a folder on a thumb drive, to the daily photo review and critique sessions. Students are encouraged to use image management software for this selection process. Peter recommends PhotoMechanic, however other programs such as Apple’s Aperture, or Adobe Lightroom may be used. PhotoMechanic can be downloaded for a free trial basis from camerabits.com.

Students will be encouraged to choose from the outset if they want to show their work in color or in black and white, and they will be encouraged to stick to their choice of one of the other throughout the workshop.

Final Group Show and Portfolios of Past Work

At each photo critique and review session, Peter will work with each photographer to make a “selects” folder of their most successful images. At the end of the week, Peter will select with each photographer from this overall “selects” folder, a final individual photo story of 15 images, which will be seen as part of a group final show during the last workshop session.

Each participant should also bring a portfolio of a selection of their past work. Approximately 30 photographs are recommended, and they may be brought in a folder on a thumb drive, or as a selection of prints. Students’ portfolios of past work will also be shared during the final session of the workshop.
